Thiruvananthapuram, <\/strong>June 24:<\/em>\u00a0Kerala Fibre Optic Network Ltd (KFON), the state-run internet service initiative, has achieved a major milestone by securing an \u2018A\u2019 category Internet Service Provider (ISP) licence from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India. This licence enables KFON to provide broadband internet services across the entire country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Previously restricted to operating within Kerala, KFON can now set up network systems in other Indian states and collaborate with major ISPs to offer nationwide services. This expansion marks a significant step in Kerala\u2019s mission to bridge the digital divide and ensure inclusive internet access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWith this licence, KFON can now act as a full-fledged Internet Service Provider, delivering high-speed broadband services not only across Kerala but throughout India,\u201d said Dr. Santosh Babu IAS (Retd.), Managing Director of KFON. \u201cThis is a crucial milestone in our journey and will significantly boost our capacity to deliver better and more widespread internet services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n KFON has already established an extensive optical fibre network spanning over 30,000 kilometres across Kerala, connecting government offices, educational institutions, and underserved households. The project aims to provide free internet to 20 lakh below-poverty-line (BPL) families and offer affordable connectivity to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan welcomed the development, stating on social media: \u201cKerala becomes the only state in the country with its own internet service. Now, our prestigious KFON project can begin operations to provide internet as a basic right to our people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n As KFON prepares to scale its operations nationwide, the state model is being closely watched as a potential blueprint for public-sector-led internet infrastructure in India.
