In a significant ruling, the Calcutta High Court has directed Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami to pay a monthly alimony of \u20b94 lakh to his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan. The order, issued by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee, mandates Shami to provide \u20b91.5 lakh per month for Jahan’s personal maintenance and an additional \u20b92.5 lakh for the care and expenses of their minor daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This verdict comes after Jahan appealed against a 2018 order by the Alipore court in Kolkata, which had directed Shami to pay \u20b950,000 per month and \u20b980,000 for their daughter’s expenses. At that time, Jahan had initially sought a total of \u20b910 lakh\u2014\u20b97 lakh for herself and her daughter\u2014but the lower court had rejected her plea.
During the appeal, Jahan’s legal counsel argued for a higher alimony amount, citing Shami’s substantial financial standing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to his income tax returns for the 2021 financial year, Shami’s annual income was approximately \u20b97.19 crore, translating to roughly \u20b960 lakh per month. Jahan’s legal team also asserted that her total monthly expenses, including those for their daughter, exceeded \u20b96 lakh.
Considering these details, the High Court ruled in favor of Jahan’s petition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Justice Mukherjee stated in the order, “In my opinion, granting \u20b91,50,000\/- per month to the petitioner no. 1 wife and \u20b92,50,000\/- per month to her daughter as maintenance is just and proper to ensure financial stability for both petitioners.” The court also noted that Shami could voluntarily contribute additional amounts for his daughter’s education or other future needs.

The High Court questioned the basis of the previous decision, stating that it was unclear why the Alipore court had granted significantly lower amounts. The revised order indicates that given Shami’s considerable income and the fact that Jahan has not remarried and lives alone with her daughter, the prior ruling required corrections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hasin Jahan, a former model and cheerleader for the Kolkata Knight Riders, married Mohammed Shami in 2014. The couple had a daughter in 2015.
