SHENZHEN, CHINA: Chinese tech giant Huawei has reportedly unveiled groundbreaking electric vehicle (EV) battery technology that it claims can power an EV for up to 3,000 kilometers on a single charge and achieve a full recharge in a mere five minutes. Reports indicate that the company has filed patents for this innovative solid-state battery design and its rapid charging capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Huawei’s new battery reportedly operates using nitrogen-doped sulfide electrodes, which are designed to significantly mitigate battery performance degradation over time. The company claims an energy density for this battery ranging from 400 to 500 Wh\/kg, which would be approximately three times higher than current lithium-ion batteries. With such an energy density, a mid-sized electric car could theoretically travel 3,000 kilometers on a full charge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, Huawei asserts that the battery can be charged from zero to 100 percent in just five minutes.
It’s important to note that the 3,000-kilometer range is based on the CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle). When adjusted to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) cycle, the range would likely be closer to 2,000 kilometers. Even at the lower estimate, these figures are substantially ahead of the range offered by most current EVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, achieving such a dramatic increase in a car’s driving range would not solely depend on this technology. It would also necessitate a significantly larger and heavier battery pack. The challenge extends beyond merely manufacturing such a large battery; integrating it into a car and balancing the associated costs would be a major hurdle. Nonetheless, this technology could be more instrumental for companies in the future to build smaller and lighter battery packs, which could still offer ranges of 800 to 1,000 kilometers.
