It is widely believed that Aurangzeb ordered the demolition of the Keshavdeva Temple (a large temple dedicated to Krishna) at the site and subsequently had the Shahi Eidgah Mosque constructed adjacent to, and reportedly using materials from, the razed temple. This act is central to the Hindu claims of encroachment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Colonial Era Developments: During British rule, the land around the disputed site came under the ownership of Raja Patni Mal of Varanasi, who had purchased it from the East India Company.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">20th Century Developments:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">In 1944, Madan Mohan Malaviya, a prominent freedom fighter and educationist, acquired the land from Raja Patni Mal to establish the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Trust.
