PATNA, Bihar \u2013 A significant controversy has erupted in Bihar, a state slated for elections later this year, over a move to distribute sanitary pads featuring an image of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Approximately 500,000 women have reportedly received sanitary pad packets embossed with Gandhi’s photograph. The initiative, named “Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana,” aims to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene among women. The scheme also includes a promise of a monthly payment of \u20b92,500 to women from impoverished families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the inclusion of Rahul Gandhi’s image on the sanitary pad packets has drawn sharp criticism, particularly from the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
BJP Slams Congress, Calls It ‘Insult to Women’
The BJP has vehemently condemned the move, labeling it an “insult to the women of Bihar.” BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari lashed out at the Congress, questioning the rationale behind placing Rahul Gandhi’s picture on the packets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What is the logic behind putting Rahul’s picture on the packets?” Bhandari questioned, adding, “Congress is an anti-women party, and the women of Bihar will teach a lesson to both Congress and RJD.”
RJD Calls It ‘Ideological Bankruptcy’
Adding to the criticism, RJD spokesperson Neeraj Kumar also expressed disapproval of the Congress’s approach. Kumar stated that such a move could be termed as “ideological bankruptcy or lack of intellect in politics.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the “Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana” aims to promote menstrual hygiene and provide financial assistance to women, its execution with the political leader’s image has clearly backfired, triggering a political slugfest. The Congress party, along with its alliance partner RJD, is gearing up for the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar, and this initiative appears to be part of their outreach efforts. However, the choice of branding has provided ammunition to the opposition, leading to accusations of politicizing a sensitive health issue and disrespecting women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
