Mymensingh, Bangladesh<\/strong> \u2013 July 17, 2025: Bangladeshi authorities have clarified that the building initially reported to be the ancestral home of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, which had begun demolition, is in fact not directly connected to his family. This comes after an international outcry, including strong reactions from India, prompting a re-evaluation of the situation. The demolition of the specific building, which was the former office of the Mymensingh Children’s Academy, has been halted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Mofidul Alam, the Deputy Commissioner of Mymensingh, confirmed on Wednesday that a detailed verification by local authorities, including examining government records and speaking with local elders, concluded that the demolished structure had no direct link to Satyajit Ray’s ancestors. “The house that was being demolished used to be the office of the Mymensingh Children’s Academy. There are no records to prove it has any links to Satyajit Ray’s ancestors,” Alam stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Crucially, the district administration has affirmed that Ray’s true ancestral home, known locally as Durlov House, remains intact and is under preservation. “We have ensured that Ray’s ancestral property is still intact. We spoke to its current owner, who confirmed that he bought the property directly from Ray’s family and possesses documents to prove it. The adjacent building that was slated for demolition was mistakenly identified as Ray’s ancestral home,” Alam added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The controversy erupted following several news reports, widely circulated in India and internationally, claiming that a century-old structure built by Satyajit Ray’s grandfather, celebrated writer-publisher Upendra Kishore Ray Chowdhury, was being torn down. The building in question, which had been abandoned for a decade, was deemed unsafe by authorities and was slated to be replaced by a new semi-concrete structure to continue the Children’s Academy activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The Indian Ministry of External Affairs had expressed “profound regret” over the initial reports, offering to collaborate on repairing and reconstructing the property into a museum, symbolizing the “shared culture” between India and Bangladesh. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also voiced her distress, calling for the preservation of the “heritage-laden house.” Following these strong reactions, Bangladeshi authorities reportedly halted the demolition of the controversial building and formed a committee to explore its reconstruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Officials in Bangladesh stated that the decision to demolish the old Children’s Academy building was made due to safety concerns, as it had fallen into disrepair. Md Mehedi Zaman, the District Children Affairs Officer, noted that the academy had been operating from rented premises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
