BANGKOK, Thailand<\/strong> – Thai police have launched a major investigation and filed charges against a 35-year-old woman, identified as Wilawan Emsawat, also known as “Sik Golf,” for allegedly blackmailing senior Buddhist monks across various provinces after recording them engaging in sexual acts. She faces charges of blackmail, money laundering, and receiving stolen goods, following a thorough review of evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Authorities uncovered an astonishing 80,000 video clips and photos of Emsawat engaging in sexual relations with monks at her home. Police reported that she had set up extensive technical equipment to facilitate these recordings. Five mobile phones seized from her residence contained numerous videos and photos depicting sexual encounters with various monks, many of whom, according to the Central Investigation Bureau, were still wearing their traditional orange robes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emsawat was arrested on Tuesday at her palatial home in Nonthaburi province.
Investigations reveal that Emsawat, reportedly a former wife of a local politician, had separated from her husband after he discovered her talking to lovers at night. The investigative team stated that she had rented a luxurious, mansion-like house and acquired luxury cars to facilitate her activities. Police estimate that she amassed over 100 crore rupees (approximately $12 million USD) through the blackmail scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Emsawat had previously made headlines in a television show where she claimed a Buddhist monk had bought her a Mercedes-Benz car. She also stated that a temple community had provided her with money and even a credit card. In 2018, Emsawat claimed she began dating another monk she met on Facebook, living with him “like a couple.” She revealed that she gave birth to a child in 2019, and the relationship ended after the monk provided her with a significant sum of money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emsawat also told police that she experienced extreme poverty during her childhood.
The full extent of her scheme came to light after a Bangkok-based Buddhist monk went missing. It was later revealed that he had fled after being continuously threatened by Emsawat for money. Emsawat is currently in jail and has not yet applied for bail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The scandal has brought to light concerns about the financial management within Thailand’s Buddhist temples, many of which are exceptionally wealthy, with senior monks often responsible for handling large sums of money. The Sangha Supreme Council, Thailand’s supreme organization of Buddhist monks, has convened an emergency meeting to assess the situation and has announced that an investigation into such improper practices within monasteries will be conducted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The widespread outrage among Thailand’s population, over 90% of whom are Buddhist, highlights the deep respect for monastic life.
