Thiruvananthapuram<\/strong>: V.S. Achuthanandan, the veteran Communist leader and an unfading star in Kerala’s political firmament, passed away on Monday afternoon at the age of 102. A towering figure who dominated Kerala’s political landscape for decades, Achuthanandan, known affectionately as V.S., breathed his last at approximately 4:00 PM at S.U.T. Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, drawing the curtain on a life forged in struggles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition conveyed their condolences, mourning the loss of a true hero of the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising and the longest-serving Communist leader in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


V.S. Achuthanandan had been leading a life of rest following his tenure as Chief Minister, grappling with age-related ailments. His health deteriorated recently, leading to his admission to S.U.T. Hospital on June 23rd. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife Vasumathi and children, V.A. Arunkumar and V.V. Asha. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, CPM State Secretary M.V. Govindan, other ministers, and party leaders had visited him at the hospital earlier on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


V.S. Achuthanandan was the last surviving link among the founding members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM). He served as Chief Minister of Kerala from 2006 to 2011 and was Leader of the Opposition for a total of 15 years across three terms. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly three times. From 1985 to 2009, he was a member of the party’s Politburo. He was later demoted from the Politburo along with Pinarayi Vijayan due to factionalism within the party. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1980 to 1992, he served as the CPM State Secretary. After stepping down as Chief Minister, he was the Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission from 2016 to 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Born on October 20, 1923, in Punnapra, Alappuzha district, to Sankaran and Akamma, V.S. ended his formal education after seventh grade following the demise of his parents, quickly immersing himself in the struggles of the working class. His political journey began with the Nivarthana agitation (Abstention Movement) in Travancore, a movement for administrative reforms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the agitation, he joined the State Congress in 1938. V.S. then expanded his activities to trade unions and progressive movements, officially joining the Communist Party in 1940.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


P. Krishna Pillai is widely considered V.S.’s political guru. He actively participated in the struggles to protect the rights of agricultural laborers in Alappuzha and was a part of the freedom movement. A defining moment in his political life was the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising in 1946, where he played a pivotal role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


When the first Communist ministry came to power in Kerala in 1957, V.S. was a member of the party’s state committee, the last surviving individual among the nine members of that historic committee. His first electoral contest was in 1965 from the Ambalapuzha constituency, where he was defeated by Congress candidate K.S. Krishnakurup. However, two years later, in 1967, he entered the Legislative Assembly for the first time, defeating Congress’s A. Achuthan by 9,515 votes. This victory was repeated in 1970 against K.K. Kumarapilla of the RSP. In 1977, however, V.S. again tasted defeat, this time at the hands of Kumarapilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


After the 1977 defeat, V.S. made a comeback to the electoral arena in 1991, winning the Mararikulam constituency by defeating Congress candidate D. Sugathan by 9,980 votes. However, in 1996, he was defeated in the same constituency due to internal party dissent. Drawing energy from this setback, V.S. emerged even stronger within the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


In 2001, V.S. contested from Malampuzha in Palakkad, a constituency considered a strong bastion of the CPM. While the Left usually secured majorities well into five figures in this constituency, V.S.’s majority was limited to 4,703. Satheesan Pacheni, a Youth Congress leader from Kannur district, was his opponent in Malampuzha. In 2006, V.S. significantly increased his majority in the same constituency to 20,017 votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Despite reaching the Legislative Assembly multiple times, positions of power often eluded V.S. There was a saying during this period: “When the party wins, V.S. loses, and when V.S. wins, the party loses.” However, this narrative changed in 2006 when the LDF came to power with a massive majority, and V.S. was declared Chief Minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 82 years old, he became the oldest Chief Minister in Kerala’s history.
In 2011, V.S. was re-elected from Malampuzha, but the LDF was in opposition. In 2016, the LDF returned to power, and V.S. again won from Malampuzha, but Pinarayi Vijayan became Chief Minister. As a measure of reconciliation, V.S. was later appointed Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission.
