Karkidaka Vavu, which falls on the new moon day (Amavasya) of the Malayalam month of Karkidakam, is considered a highly auspicious occasion for performing ‘Bali’ or ‘Pithru Tharpanam’ \u2013 offerings made to appease and seek blessings from departed souls. It is believed that performing these rites helps the ancestors attain moksha (liberation) and brings spiritual strength and well-being to the living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prominent locations such as Aluva Manappuram, Varkala’s Papanasam Beach, Thiruvallam Sree Parasurama Temple, Kovalam, Thirunelli Papanasini, Thiruvilwamala, and Parassinikadavu Sri Muthappan Temple witnessed massive crowds of devotees. At Aluva Manappuram, the rituals commenced as early as 2:30 AM, with arrangements made to accommodate a large number of participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities, including the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) and various district administrations, had made elaborate arrangements to facilitate the smooth and safe conduct of the ceremonies. This included setting up temporary pavilions, ensuring cleanliness, providing essential amenities like drinking water and bio-toilets, and deploying police, fire force, and lifeguard personnel to manage crowds and ensure safety, especially in light of the ongoing heavy rains and concerns about high tides in coastal areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Devotees, predominantly men dressed in traditional attire, meticulously followed the instructions of priests, offering cooked rice balls (pindam), sesame seeds (ellu), tulsi leaves, and other sacred items on banana leaves before immersing them in the holy waters. The rituals are a profound act of remembrance, gratitude, and a connection to ancestral lineage, symbolizing the unbroken bond between generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the rituals are typically performed by individual families, Karkidaka Vavu is unique as it is a collective offering for all ancestors, irrespective of their individual death anniversaries. The day is observed with strict vegetarian diets and a somber, spiritual atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials reported that despite the challenging weather, the ceremonies were largely peaceful and orderly, with devotees showing immense devotion.
