Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli confirmed the grim casualty figures, stating that five forestry workers and five members of the AKUT rescue organization were killed when a sudden shift in wind direction caused the flames to rapidly engulf them. At least 14 other rescuers and forestry workers were hospitalized with injuries. Funerals for the fallen responders were held on Thursday, with grieving families, friends, and leading politicians attending services across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This incident brings the total number of fatalities from wildfires in Turkey this year to 13. Earlier this month, an elderly man and two forestry workers were also killed in a wildfire near Odemis, in Izmir province.
The fires, which have been flaring across Turkey since late June, are putting immense pressure on emergency services. Minister Yumakli issued a stark warning about the continuing severe weather conditions. “Starting tomorrow, we are facing extraordinary temperatures and extreme wind shifts. Once again, I call on all 86 million citizens to be vigilant and exercise extra caution,” he urged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan extended his condolences to the families of those who died, praising their sacrifice “to protect our forests at the cost of their lives.” The Justice Minister announced that two prosecutors have been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Eskisehir incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The widespread blazes have prompted significant evacuations and, in some areas, the declaration of disaster zones. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated on Friday that Izmir and Bilecik provinces had been declared “disaster areas affecting public life.” Between June 27 and Thursday, residents from 120 neighborhoods nationwide were evacuated, and over 12,000 personnel have been deployed to combat the fires. Preliminary assessments indicate that 311 homes have been destroyed or severely damaged, with 85 temporary housing units established for those displaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the exact cause of the Eskisehir fire remains unclear, authorities are investigating.
