Designated a Ramsar site in 2019, Parvati Arga Bird Sanctuary is a permanent freshwater environment, formed by two oxbow lakes, Parvati Tal and Arga Tal. These crescent-shaped water bodies, remnants of the changing course of the Saryu River, now serve as a crucial lifeline for a myriad of resident and migratory birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every winter, typically from November to March, the wetland becomes a bustling hub for avian visitors arriving from as far as Europe, Central Asia, Siberia, Tibet, and China. Species like Northern Pintails, Greylag Geese, Mallards, Gadwalls, Red-crerested Pochards, Northern Shovelers, Common Teals, Common Pochards, Eurasian Coots, and Ferruginous Ducks flock to its waters, some flying over 5,000 km and at altitudes exceeding 8,500 meters to reach this sanctuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the seasonal migrants, Parvati Arga is also home to a rich array of resident birds, including the majestic Sarus Crane (Uttar Pradesh’s state bird), Painted Storks, Jacanas (Pheasant-tailed and Bronze-winged), Purple Swamphens, Asian Openbills, White Ibis, Little Grebes, Fulvous Whistling Ducks, White-necked Storks, Indian Peafowl, Black Drongos, and Indian Rollers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sanctuary is also a critical refuge for several globally threatened species, notably the critically endangered White-rumped Vulture (Gyps bengalensis), the Indian Vulture (Gyps indicus), and the endangered Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus). Other vulnerable species like the Greater Spotted Eagle (Aquila clanga), Sociable Lapwing (Vanellus gregarius), and Baer’s Pochard (Aythya baeri) also find solace here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What sets Parvati Arga apart is its relative obscurity. Unlike more famous bird sanctuaries, it remains largely untouched by large tourist crowds, offering a serene and intimate birding experience. This peaceful environment allows for undisturbed observation of the diverse avian population and other wildlife, including jackals, nilgai, and wild boars. The region also boasts a rich aquatic flora, with plants like lotus and water lilies adding to its ecological significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The significance of Parvati Arga extends beyond birdwatching. It plays a vital ecological role, contributing to groundwater recharge, buffering floods, and maintaining the life cycles of various aquatic species. Recognizing its potential, efforts are underway to develop Parvati Arga and the nearby Tikri forest range as eco-tourism hubs, particularly given their proximity to Ayodhya. This initiative aims to not only boost tourism but also provide employment opportunities for local communities while promoting environmental awareness and sustainable wetland management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The “Integrated Management Plan of Parvati Arga Ramsar Site” and a “Factbook of India’s Ramsar Sites” have recently been launched, underscoring the commitment to preserving this vital wetland. While it may not yet be a household name, Parvati Arga Bird Sanctuary truly stands as one of India’s best-kept birding secrets, offering an unforgettable encounter with nature’s feathered wonders.
