The MEA asserted that India’s oil imports are guided by national interests and the need for energy security, not political alignment. It highlighted that India turned to Russian oil only after traditional suppliers diverted their exports to Europe following the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict, a move that the US itself had “actively encouraged” at the time to stabilize global energy markets. The statement also pointed to what it called the “double standards” of Western nations, noting that the EU’s trade with Russia, including in goods and services, was significantly higher than India’s in 2024. The MEA cited record-high European imports of Russian LNG and noted that the US continues to import crucial commodities like uranium and palladium from Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“India’s imports are meant to ensure predictable and affordable energy costs to the Indian consumer. They are a necessity compelled by the global market situation,” the MEA stated.
