Bharti, known for her candid and often fiery comments, said that Godse’s crime could not be adequately described by the word “terrorism” alone. She emphasized that he killed a person who was a visionary for an independent India, someone who dreamed of a self-reliant nation not dependent on foreign loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In her remarks, Bharti stated, “The sin that Nathuram Godse committed cannot be sufficiently described by the word terrorism. He killed a man who was dreaming of what an independent India would be like.” She further added, “We cannot lessen the gravity of his sin by merely calling him a terrorist.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is not the first time Uma Bharti has commented on Godse. In 2016, she had referred to him as a “sarfira” (crazy person) and stated that while Godse took Gandhi’s life, his ideology was immortal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her recent statements come at a time when there is renewed debate and public discussion around historical figures and their actions. Bharti’s comments stand in contrast to some other figures within the right-wing ecosystem who have been more lenient or even laudatory of Godse.
