New delhi:In a significant move, the Indian government has extended the cut-off date for eligibility under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019, by a decade. The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a new notification stating that religious minorities from neighboring countries who entered India on or before December 31, 2024, will now be eligible to apply for Indian citizenship. This is a crucial update from the previous cut-off date of December 31, 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Countries Covered: The CAA provides a pathway to citizenship for persecuted minority communities from three specific neighboring countries:Pakistan,Bangladesh,Afghanistan<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Communities Included: The law is applicable to six minority religious groups who fled persecution in these three countries:Hindus,Sikhs,Buddhists,Jains,Parsis,Christians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the law applies nationwide, certain states are expected to see a greater impact due to their proximity to the source countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Assam: A recent statement from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that as of September 3, 2025, only three individuals had received citizenship under the CAA, despite 12 applications. The low number was cited by the CM to counter earlier apprehensions about a massive influx of applicants in the state. One of the first individuals to receive citizenship under the CAA in Assam was Dulon Das, a 50-year-old man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other States: The move is expected to particularly benefit a large number of people, especially Hindus from Pakistan, who have crossed over to states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Delhi after 2014 and were previously ineligible to apply for citizenship under the CAA.
