Addressing a public meeting in Imphal, Manipur, PM Modi hailed Karki’s appointment as “a shining example of women’s empowerment” and expressed confidence that she would “pave the way for peace, stability, and prosperity in Nepal.” He also reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Nepal, calling it a “close friend, connected by shared history and faith.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Karki, 73, took the oath of office on Friday evening, following the resignation of former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli. The political crisis was triggered by a nationwide youth-led “Gen Z” protest movement against corruption, political stagnation, and a controversial social media ban. The protests led to violent clashes, with demonstrators setting fire to government buildings and demanding the dissolution of parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs also welcomed the formation of the new interim government. “As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy and a long-term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries,” the statement read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Karki’s appointment as the head of the interim government, which has been tasked with holding fresh elections within six months, has been widely welcomed by the protestors and political observers alike.
