This move is widely seen by security analysts as a strategic effort to circumvent the severe sanctions imposed on the organization by international bodies like the UN and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). These sanctions have made it increasingly difficult for the group to operate and raise funds through conventional financial systems. By adopting a new name, the group aims to de-link itself from its long history of terrorism and operate more freely, at least within Pakistan’s borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reports from Pakistan’s media suggest that the group is increasingly relying on digital payment methods, such as e-wallets and UPI transfers, to channel funds and bypass formal banking channels. A recent FATF report had also noted this trend, tracing several such digital wallets back to the group and the family members of Masood Azhar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The name change follows a recent Indian counter-terror operation, which reportedly targeted JeM’s headquarters in Bahawalpur and resulted in significant casualties to the group, including family members of Masood Azhar. The rebranding is also seen as a way to regroup and rebuild the organization’s infrastructure, which was severely damaged in the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the JeM has been formally banned by the Pakistani government since 2002, it has long been known to operate with impunity under various aliases.
