{"id":6445,"date":"2025-09-24T00:21:51","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T00:21:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/indianinsightnews.com\/?p=6445"},"modified":"2025-09-24T00:23:01","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T00:23:01","slug":"customs-department-raids-residences-of-malayalam-actors-seizes-vehicles-in-operation-numkhor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/indianinsightnews.com\/?p=6445","title":{"rendered":"Customs Department Raids Residences of Malayalam Actors, Seizes Vehicles in &#8220;Operation Numkhor&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\"><br><strong>KOCHI<\/strong> &#8211; The Customs and Central Excise Department has launched a major crackdown on a luxury car smuggling ring, seizing 36 vehicles as part of &#8220;Operation Numkhor.&#8221; The raids, which spanned over 30 locations across Kerala, targeted individuals who allegedly purchased cars illegally imported from Bhutan without paying proper import duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"> The investigation has brought prominent Malayalam film actors Dulquer Salmaan, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and Amit Chakkalakkal under the scanner.<br>Background of the Investigation<br>&#8220;Numkhor&#8221; is a Bhutanese word for &#8220;vehicle.&#8221; The Customs department had received intelligence about a large-scale racket smuggling old and used vehicles from Bhutan into India for years. The smugglers would purchase old vehicles, often discarded by the Bhutanese army, at meager prices in auctions and then transport them across the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><br>Modus Operandi of the Smuggling Racket<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Smuggling: The vehicles were smuggled into India either whole or in parts, concealed in containers. In some instances, they were driven into India under the guise of being tourist vehicles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Fake Registration: The smuggled vehicles were given fake documents and registered in states like Himachal Pradesh, often with &#8220;HP-52&#8221; series numbers. They were then brought to Kerala and sold for a huge profit. Some vehicles were also found with fake &#8220;KL&#8221; registration numbers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Usage: Many of the seized vehicles lacked proper ownership documents, fitness certificates, or insurance. Despite this, they were being used on the roads. Customs officials also suspect that these vehicles may have been used to smuggle gold and narcotics.<br>Extent of Tax Evasion<br>The import of old vehicles is strictly prohibited under Indian law. The smuggling ring, by violating this law, caused a massive tax evasion worth crores of rupees. The investigation has revealed a large network involved in selling these vehicles to prominent individuals. According to Customs Preventive Commissioner Tiju Thomas, the owners of the seized vehicles cannot settle the case by simply paying a fine. They will have to appear in person and provide an explanation.<br>Involvement of Actors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Dulquer Salmaan: During the search at his residence, Customs officials found two of his four vehicles. A Land Rover was seized and taken to the Customs yard. The Nissan Patrol could not be moved due to a lack of road fitness, and alternative arrangements are being sought. The whereabouts of the other two vehicles are unknown.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Prithviraj Sukumaran: A raid was conducted at Prithviraj&#8217;s residence, but no vehicles were seized. However, Customs found that the payment for his Defender vehicle was routed to the account of a smuggling syndicate based in Coimbatore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Amit Chakkalakkal: Six vehicles, including a Toyota Land Cruiser, were seized from Amit Chakkalakkal. He is accused of being uncooperative with the investigation and reportedly refused to accept the summons. Customs officials had to seek police assistance at his residence.<br>Both Dulquer Salmaan and Prithviraj have informed Customs officials that they are cooperating fully with the investigation.
