Kabul<\/strong>: Afghanistan has officially withdrawn from the upcoming tri-nation T20I series involving Pakistan and Sri Lanka, following the deaths of three Afghan cricketers in what its cricket board claimed was a “cowardly attack carried out by the Pakistani regime.” The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced its decision on Saturday, amidst escalating tensions between the two neighbouring nations.
The series, which was also set to feature Sri Lanka, had been scheduled to take place in Rawalpindi and Lahore between November 17 and 29.
In a strongly worded statement, the ACB expressed its “deepest sorrow and grief” over the “tragic martyrdom” of the players: Kabeer, Sibghatullah, and Haroon. The board confirmed that the three cricketers, along with five other individuals from Urgun District in Paktika Province, were killed in the attack. Seven others were reported injured in the same incident.
According to the ACB statement, the players were attacked after returning from a friendly cricket match in Sharana, the provincial capital. The board stated that the decision to pull out of the international fixture was taken “in response of this tragic incident and as a gesture of respect to the victims.”
The Afghanistan Cricket Board further called the loss a “great loss for Afghanistan’s sports community, its athletes, and the cricketing family,” extending its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Paktika Province.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread condemnation within the Afghan cricket community. Star captain Rashid Khan publicly welcomed the ACB’s decision, calling the actions that led to the deaths “absolutely immoral and barbaric” and a “grave violation of human rights.” He added, “I stand with our people at this difficult time, our national dignity must come before all else.”
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has since confirmed that the series will go ahead as scheduled and has invited Zimbabwe to replace Afghanistan in the tri-nation tournament.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
