New Delhi, December 8, 2025<\/strong> \u2014 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Congress party and India\u2019s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, accusing them of \u201csurrendering\u201d to the Muslim League in 1937 by agreeing to adopt only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram<\/em> as the national song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Speaking in the Lok Sabha during a special debate marking 150 years of Vande Mataram<\/em>, the Prime Minister alleged that this decision\u2014taken during the pre-independence era\u2014was a politically motivated compromise that contributed to the circumstances that eventually led to the Partition of India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n PM Modi claimed that Congress leadership, under Nehru, conceded to the Muslim League\u2019s objections to the full song, particularly its depiction in Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay\u2019s novel Anand Math<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe politics of the Muslim League opposing Vande Mataram<\/em> gained momentum in 1937. Mohammed Ali Jinnah raised slogans against it,\u201d Modi said. \u201cInstead of condemning those statements, Nehru began \u2018investigating\u2019 the song just five days after Jinnah\u2019s opposition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Prime Minister further asserted that Nehru accepted Jinnah\u2019s argument that the song could \u201cprovoke and irritate Muslims\u201d because of its literary context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Quoting historical records, Modi declared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt is the misfortune of the country that on October 26, 1937, the Congress compromised on Vande Mataram<\/em>. They fragmented the song. They bowed to the Muslim League. To save Nehru\u2019s throne, Congress surrendered before the Muslim League.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n PM Modi characterised the Congress Working Committee\u2019s decision to adopt only the first two stanzas as a \u201chistoric failure\u201d and a betrayal of national sentiment.
