WAYANAD:<\/strong> Reflecting on his tenure (2020\u20132025), Junaid said he leaves office \u201cwith complete satisfaction,\u201d having been able to lead and contribute meaningfully to welfare initiatives in one of Kerala\u2019s most socially and ecologically sensitive districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI am stepping down with the full satisfaction of having been able to lead impactful work in the welfare sector,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Junaid credited his parents as his strongest moral influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFrom childhood, my parents taught me never to touch or take anything that does not belong to me \u2014 even if it is just a fallen mango. That lesson helped me say a firm \u2018no\u2019 to unethical opportunities throughout my public life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n He recalled that contesting the Vellamunda Division in the 2020 local body elections was a major challenge, as it had been a UDF stronghold for over three decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic made conventional campaigning impossible. Yet the people\u2019s trust and expectations helped me overcome all odds and win.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Junaid described his appointment as Chairman as unexpected, following a rare 8\u20138 tie between political fronts in the District Panchayat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe political arithmetic changed after my victory, and I was entrusted with the chairmanship through the subsequent election process.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Serving in a district with a large Adivasi population, agrarian livelihoods, and environmental challenges reshaped his understanding of development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt was an eye-opening experience to plan welfare and development from the perspective of one of India\u2019s most marginalised regions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n He said the greatest achievement of his tenure was reframing mainstream development narratives through Wayanad\u2019s lived realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cUnlearning entrenched ideas was more challenging than learning new ones. I was a student throughout these five years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Among major initiatives he highlighted were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThese initiatives linked welfare with the district\u2019s overall development trajectory.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Rejecting cynical portrayals of politics, Junaid said most public representatives enter politics with genuine intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPolitics is deeply connected to people\u2019s lives and ecological survival. Corruption exists, but reform and integrity must move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Responding to allegations of self-promotion, he said communication is a democratic duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cCitizens have the right to know about development initiatives. Communicating that is a responsibility, not self-marketing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Junaid defended the practice of having ordinary citizens inaugurate projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhen tribal friends inaugurate roads or students open school facilities, it is recognition and empowerment \u2014 not political gimmickry.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n He completed a Certificate Course in Decentralisation and Local Governance in 2022, conducted by KILA and the Digital University under Sree Narayana Guru Open University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe academic grounding helped me contribute more effectively to local governance discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n His YouTube series Panchayat Talk<\/em>, which received mentions in foreign online publications, focused on decentralisation, planning, and local governance in Kerala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe aim was to present complex governance ideas in simple language, rooted in Kerala\u2019s experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n He played an active role in environmental campaigns such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Junaid emphasised democratic values and opposition respect as essential for governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDevelopment is possible only when cooperation, mutual respect, and democratic ethics guide public life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n On corruption, he offered a sharp critique:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cCorruption is a by-product of unchecked capital and privatisation of public wealth. Fighting it must be central to opposition politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Asked about becoming an MLA, Junaid replied:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPolitics should not be about power chairs but about easing people\u2019s pain. Any opportunity to serve will be used responsibly if entrusted by the party and people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n He has authored seven books, including Decentralised Planning: Thought and Practice<\/em>, which won the Rabindranath Tagore Award from the Red Well Foundation, Kolkata. He also founded Letz Life, a speech and soft-skills training initiative established in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Explaining the Gramadaram<\/em> programme, he said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPraise uplifts people; humiliation destroys them from within. The idea was simple \u2014 respect everyone, acknowledge their dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Concluding the interview, Junaid said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHonest, corruption-free public service has always been my goal. Serving the people is the highest virtue.
