The episode is widely referred to as the 1988 executions of Iranian political prisoners.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Human rights organizations estimate that between 3,000 and 5,000 prisoners were killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Human right watch <\/strong>reported in 1990:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPrisoners were executed in secret after brief interrogations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n In 2018 Amnesty international, described the executions as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cCrimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Reports indicate that special commissions, sometimes referred to as \u201cDeath Commissions,\u201d questioned prisoners about their political beliefs. Those who refused to renounce their affiliations were reportedly executed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Historian Nikki Keddie observed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe alliance between Islamists and leftists was tactical. Once in power, the Islamists eliminated their former allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n By the mid-1980s, the earlier revolutionary unity had dissolved. University campuses were brought under strict ideological control, and leftist political movements were dismantled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 1979 Revolution was initially a broad-based movement against authoritarian rule. However, the consolidation of power that followed reshaped Iran into a system that restricted political pluralism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Communist groups were banned. Iran\u2019s revolution is not a simple story of liberation or repression. It is a complex history of alliance and betrayal, reform and control, activism and suppression.
