It forms the <strong>2,640-kilometre boundary between Afghanistan and <\/strong>Pakistan, but Afghanistan has never formally recognized it as an international border. This dispute remains one of the key reasons for recurring tensions between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the Durand Line Was Created<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Durand Line was established in <strong>1893<\/strong> through an agreement between British India and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement was signed by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Mortimer Durand<\/strong>, the Foreign Secretary of British India<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Abdur Rahman Khan<\/strong>, the ruler of Afghanistan at the time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement aimed to <strong>define the spheres of influence between British India and Afghanistan<\/strong>, creating a boundary that later became the modern border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Dispute After Pakistan\u2019s Creation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the creation of Pakistan in <strong>1947<\/strong>, the border dispute intensified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afghanistan argued that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The Durand Line agreement was signed with <strong>British India<\/strong>, not Pakistan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Therefore, a new agreement should have been negotiated after Pakistan became an independent state.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, Afghanistan has continued to <strong>refuse official recognition of the border<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pashtun Population Issue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the major consequences of the Durand Line was the division of the <strong>Pashtun ethnic population<\/strong> between two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large Pashtun communities live in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Southern and eastern regions of Afghanistan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some Pashtun political movements have historically demanded the creation of an independent state called <strong>Pashtunistan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Security Challenges Along the Border<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Durand Line region has long been a hotspot for security challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Major issues in the area include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">militant activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">cross-border attacks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">smuggling networks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pakistan has particularly expressed concern about activities linked to Tehrik -Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which Islamabad says operates from bases across the Afghan border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Controversy Over Border Fencing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pakistan has built a <strong>security fence along large sections of the Durand Line<\/strong> to control militant movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pakistan\u2019s position:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The fencing is necessary for <strong>national security and border control<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afghanistan\u2019s position:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The fence attempts to <strong>legitimize a border that Kabul does not recognize<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Situation Today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the Durand Line issue continues to influence relations between Afghanistan\u2019s Taliban-led administration and the government of Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Security experts believe that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWithout a long-term solution to the Durand Line dispute, lasting peace between Afghanistan and Pakistan will remain difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Durand Line is one of the most disputed borders in South Asia.
