Thiruvananthapuram<\/strong>:V D Satheesan was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Kerala. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan, where the 21-member UDF cabinet also assumed office. The event marked the beginning of a new political chapter in the state and witnessed the presence of leaders from both the ruling and opposition fronts.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOne of the major highlights of the ceremony was the rendition of the full version of Vande Mataram. Usually, only the first two stanzas of the song are sung at official functions, making the complete rendition notable. Muslim League ministers, along with all cabinet members, stood up in respect while the song was being sung. After taking oath, Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan said, \u201cThe government\u2019s goal is to lead Kerala towards a new path of development and social justice. We aim to build a model administration where both the government and opposition work together for the people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ceremony was attended by former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan , CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan , Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and Muslim League leader P K Kunhalikutty , among other prominent political figures. The sight of leaders from rival political camps sharing the same stage became one of the most talked-about moments of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Political leaders exchanged greetings both during and after the swearing-in ceremony. Members of the new UDF cabinet said the government would work closely with the people. The first cabinet meeting also announced key welfare decisions, including free KSRTC bus travel for women and a salary hike for ASHA workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, the full rendition of Vande Mataram sparked political discussions. While some described it as a tribute to India\u2019s national heritage, others raised concerns regarding the secular character of official state functions. Nevertheless, the ceremony concluded in a peaceful atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vande Mataram was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in his novel Anandamath<\/em>. Recognised as India\u2019s national song, only the first two stanzas are generally sung at official events. The decision to sing the full version during the swearing-in ceremony brought renewed attention to its history, meaning, and controversies.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe opening lines \u2014 \u201cVande Mataram, Sujalam Suphalam, Malayaja Sheetalam, Shasya Shyamalam Mataram\u201d \u2014 describe India as a fertile, prosperous, and green motherland blessed with water, crops, and cool winds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later sections of the song contain references portraying the motherland as Hindu goddesses such as Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThwam Hi Durga Dashapraharana Dharini\u201d means \u201cYou are Durga, the wielder of many weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKamala Kamaladala Viharini\u201d refers to Lakshmi, the goddess residing on the lotus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cVani Vidyadayini\u201d describes Saraswati, the giver of knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These references have historically led to objections from some Muslim organisations and secular thinkers, who argued that portraying the nation as a deity conflicts with monotheistic beliefs. This is one of the reasons why only the first two stanzas came to be officially accepted for public functions after Independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, many nationalist organisations regard Vande Mataram as the spirit of India\u2019s freedom struggle. The song was widely used during the anti-British movement and became a symbol of patriotic resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
