New Delhi, August 15, 2026:<\/strong> India marked its 80th Independence Day with a historic ceremony at the Red Fort in New Delhi, where the full rendition of the National Song, \u2018Vande Mataram,\u2019 was performed for the first time as part of the Independence Day ceremony<\/strong>. The event also featured an aerial flower shower by Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopters carrying the Tricolour and a \u2018Vande Mataram\u2019 flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/strong> unfurled the National Flag at the historic ramparts and delivered his 13th consecutive Independence Day address from the Red Fort. This year\u2019s celebrations placed particular emphasis on \u2018Yuva Shakti\u2019 (youth power)<\/strong> and the goal of building a \u2018Viksit Bharat\u2019 (Developed India) by 2047<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ceremony marked a significant change in the traditional Independence Day programme. After the Tricolour was unfurled and the ceremonial 21-gun salute was conducted, the Army band played \u2018Vande Mataram\u2019<\/strong>, with those present joining in the National Song. It was followed by the National Anthem, \u2018Jana Gana Mana\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The rendition has added significance this year as India observes the 150th anniversary of \u2018Vande Mataram\u2019<\/strong>. Two Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopters showered flower petals over the Red Fort<\/strong>. He said the sacrifices of the freedom fighters should continue to inspire the country as India moves towards a developed nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A central theme of Modi\u2019s Independence Day address was the ambition to make India a developed nation by 2047<\/strong>, when the country will mark 100 years of independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Prime Minister placed young Indians at the centre of this transformation, stressing that India\u2019s demographic strength, technological capabilities and entrepreneurial energy would be crucial to achieving the 2047 target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Modi also stressed the importance of self-reliance<\/strong>, particularly in strategically important sectors. His address highlighted critical minerals, energy security and semiconductor technology as important areas for India\u2019s future growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He outlined what he described as a \u2018Sapta Dhara\u2019 (Seven Streams)<\/strong> approach to development, linking economic growth with strategic capabilities and national self-reliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Prime Minister gave particular importance to India\u2019s youth. The Independence Day programme itself was built around the theme of \u2018Yuva Shakti \u2014 Viksit Bharat @2047\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Technology and artificial intelligence also featured prominently in the government\u2019s development agenda, with emphasis on preparing young Indians for the rapidly changing digital economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another major attraction was the participation of around 2,500 NCC cadets and My Bharat volunteers<\/strong> from the Army, Navy and Air Force.
