New Delhi, September 18, 2026:<\/strong> The Election Commission of India has temporarily frozen the name \u2018All India Trinamool Congress\u2019 (TMC)<\/strong> and its reserved \u2018Flowers and Grass\u2019 symbol<\/strong>, following a dispute between rival factions of the party. Neither the faction led by Mamata Banerjee<\/strong> nor the rival faction associated with Ritabrata Banerjee and Arup Roy<\/strong> will be allowed to use the party\u2019s existing name and symbol for the upcoming by-elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The interim order comes ahead of the October 6 by-elections in Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal<\/strong>, as well as the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll in Assam. The Commission has directed the two factions to contest under separate names and with different symbols selected from its list of free symbols. The rival faction has challenged the validity of those amendments and disputed the continuation of the existing organisational structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With the by-elections approaching and insufficient time to complete the substantive proceedings, the Election Commission opted for an interim arrangement rather than immediately deciding which faction would retain the party name and symbol. The final determination is to be made under Paragraph 15 of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An election symbol is more than a graphic on a ballot paper. This prevents either side from immediately claiming exclusive electoral ownership of the established symbol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The faction will have to campaign under a new name and symbol rather than the established TMC identity. This could make it more difficult to communicate its organisational claim to voters during the by-election period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Introducing a new political identity requires campaign material, publicity and organisational mobilisation.
