Stalin<\/strong> and <strong>Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray<\/strong>, have also criticised the Election Commission&#8217;s handling of the issue and raised demands ranging from resignation to a halt to SIR and an independent examination of the allegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TMC leader <strong>Derek O&#8217;Brien<\/strong> has called for the CEC to be impeached, according to <em>India Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opposition&#8217;s demands differ in their precise form, but a common theme is the demand for greater transparency and accountability from the Election Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Protests spread beyond Parliament<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The controversy has also moved onto the streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congress workers have staged demonstrations outside Election Commission offices and in several states, demanding action against Gyanesh Kumar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <em>India Today<\/em>, protests were reported in places including <strong>Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh and Manipur<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some locations, demonstrations reportedly resulted in confrontations between protesters and police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protests have turned the dispute over SIR and the Election Commission into a wider political mobilisation by opposition parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the Election Commission say?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Election Commission has rejected the suggestion that the reported disagreements represent a breakdown in its functioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the ECI, differences of opinion, written observations and internal discussions are part of the institutional decision-making process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commission has particularly emphasised that <strong>all major decisions, including SIR, were taken unanimously by the three-member Commission<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction is central to the ECI&#8217;s defence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reported objections may demonstrate that individual commissioners raised questions or sought changes during the internal process, but the Commission maintains that the final decisions were collectively approved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, the ECI&#8217;s position is that internal deliberations should not be confused with disagreement over the final institutional decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BJP rejects opposition&#8217;s allegations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BJP has also rejected the opposition&#8217;s interpretation of the reported disagreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BJP spokesperson <strong>Sambit Patra<\/strong> argued that differences of opinion between Election Commissioners are not necessarily evidence of institutional failure. He suggested that consultation and discussion among commissioners are part of the normal functioning of an independent institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BJP has accused the wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe EC needs to present its stance, not to Rahul Gandhi, but to the public.\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 Chirag Paswan, as reported by <em>Hindustan Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His comments have added another dimension to the debate, with the focus shifting from the political allegations themselves to the question of how the Election Commission can maintain public confidence amid controversy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The constitutional question: Can the CEC simply be removed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The demand for Gyanesh Kumar&#8217;s resignation should be distinguished from the constitutional process for removing a Chief Election Commissioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opposition MPs have previously moved to initiate proceedings concerning the CEC&#8217;s removal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p against Gyanesh Kumar could move through parliamentary and constitutional channels, depending on whether opposition parties pursue a formal removal process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, the two sides remain sharply divided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>opposition<\/strong> argues that the reported internal objections, combined with its concerns over SIR and electoral-roll changes, warrant political and institutional accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Election Commission<\/strong> maintains that internal deliberations are part of its normal functioning and that its final decisions, including SIR, were taken unanimously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>BJP<\/strong> has rejected the opposition&#8217;s allegations, while some members of the ruling alliance have simultaneously called for the Commission to communicate more clearly with the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The controversy has therefore evolved from a dispute over voter-roll revision into a broader debate over <strong>transparency, institutional independence, electoral data, the rights of voters and public confidence in India&#8217;s election machinery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this stage, the reported internal disagreements and the political allegations surrounding them remain matters of intense political and institutional dispute.
