The United Arab Emirates has honoured Flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar and other crew members for their courage and efforts to protect passengers during a serious mid-flight incident, according to reports by international media.

Captain Machchhar was reportedly among those recognised with the Order of Zayed II, First Class, one of the UAE’s prestigious honours. The awards were announced by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence.

The incident reportedly occurred on September 30, 2026, aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. According to media reports, the co-pilot attacked Captain Machchhar inside the cockpit, triggering a dangerous emergency while the aircraft was in flight.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar reportedly managed to operate the cockpit door mechanism, allowing passengers and other pilots on board to intervene and help restrain the attacker. The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

The UAE’s recognition highlighted the courage, professionalism and commitment to passenger safety demonstrated by the captain and the crew during the emergency.

Captain Fought Back Despite Serious Injuries

According to reports published by international media outlets, including The Guardian, Al Jazeera and The National, the confrontation took place inside the cockpit while the aircraft was airborne.

The co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar with an axe, leaving the captain seriously injured. Despite his injuries, the captain reportedly managed to activate the cockpit door mechanism, enabling others on board to enter and help bring the situation under control.

The aircraft reportedly experienced a dangerous loss of altitude during the incident. Passengers intervened to restrain the attacker, while other pilots travelling on board helped regain control of the aircraft.

A dentist among the passengers reportedly provided emergency medical assistance to the injured captain. The flight was then diverted to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

Passengers Played a Crucial Role

Passengers aboard the aircraft also reportedly played an important role in managing the emergency.

Among those identified in media reports was Yaniv Hayoun, who helped restrain the attacker and assist with the response. Dentist Shota Muzayev reportedly provided medical assistance to the injured captain.

Reports by The Indian Express and Al Jazeera highlighted the coordinated efforts of passengers and other pilots in helping secure the aircraft and protect those on board.

The incident demonstrated how the actions of crew members and passengers can become critical during an unexpected emergency at altitude.

UAE Recognition and International Praise

The UAE leadership praised the captain and the crew for their bravery, professional conduct and commitment to passenger safety.

Sheikh Hamdan had also reportedly visited Captain Machchhar in hospital to commend his actions while he was receiving treatment for his injuries.

International media reported that Israeli President Isaac Herzog had also announced plans to recognise Machchhar with an award for civilian bravery.

The honours reflect the significance of the incident and the contribution of those who intervened to prevent a potentially catastrophic outcome.

Incident Raises Questions About Aviation Security

The reported attack inside the cockpit has renewed discussions about aviation security, particularly the risks posed by threats originating within the flight crew itself.

Aircraft security procedures are generally designed to prevent unauthorised access to the cockpit. However, the incident raises questions about how airlines should respond when a threat comes from someone already authorised to enter it.

Authorities in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Israel were reportedly involved in investigating the incident. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the attack, including how a weapon may have been brought on board and what led to the confrontation.

The investigation is expected to help clarify the sequence of events and identify any implications for aviation safety procedures.

A Recognition of Courage Under Pressure

Captain Smit Machchhar’s reported recognition by the UAE is a tribute not only to his actions but also to the collective efforts of the crew, fellow pilots and passengers who responded during the emergency.

Their intervention helped bring a dangerous situation under control and enabled the aircraft to land safely.

The incident has become a reminder of the importance of professional training, emergency preparedness and teamwork in protecting passengers during a crisis.
