Communal Unrest in Dhubri, Assam: Government Implements Strong Measures to Restore Order.

The town of Dhubri in Assam has recently witnessed a surge in communal unrest, prompting swift and stern action from the state government. Triggered by a series of provocative incidents following the Bakrid festival, the situation has escalated into violent clashes, necessitating the deployment of central forces and the implementation of strict law enforcement measures.

Incident Overview:
Tensions in Dhubri intensified after the discovery of animal remains near a religious site shortly after Bakrid on June 7. This discovery was compounded by the circulation of provocative posters promoting integration with Bangladesh and desecration near places of worship. The emergence of additional inflammatory posters, reportedly issued by an organization called “Nabin Bangla,” further aggravated communal sentiments, leading to clashes and stone-pelting between groups.

Government Response:
In light of the growing violence, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared a zero-tolerance policy toward communal provocation. The state government issued shoot-at-sight orders in extreme situations and deployed the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to stabilize the region. An investigation was also launched into the influx of cattle from West Bengal, suspected to be orchestrated by a “beef mafia” believed to be fueling unrest. The Chief Minister assured the public of his commitment to law and order, pledging to stay in Dhubri during the next Eid to ensure peace.

Arrests and Law Enforcement Actions:
To curb the unrest, authorities have arrested 38 individuals involved in the violence. These arrests form part of a wider crackdown on communal disturbances and efforts to reinforce public safety. Additionally, the Special Task Force (STF) made a significant breakthrough under “Operation Praghat” by apprehending Jaheer Ali, a “most-wanted jihadi” associated with the Ansarullah Bangla Team, who was allegedly involved in spreading extremist ideologies.

Ongoing Monitoring:
The government continues to monitor the situation in Dhubri closely and has appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid circulating rumors. Emphasizing a commitment to peace and communal harmony, officials remain focused on restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety of all communities in the region.
