ALAPPUZHA: The Working Journalists’ of India (WJI) has strongly condemned the assault on Shajan Scaria, the editor and owner of ‘Marunadan Malayali’, and has called on the Thodupuzha Police to take swift action to apprehend the culprits.
According to a statement released by the WJI, Shajan Scaria was physically attacked by a group of assailants who followed his vehicle in Thodupuzha. The attackers allegedly dragged him out of his car and subjected him to a brutal assault, leaving him with injuries all over his body.
It is reported that the attack was a retaliation for a news report published by ‘Marunadan Malayali’. The WJI has termed the incident a “brazen attack” on a media house and journalists, calling it an unacceptable infringement on press freedom.
In a joint statement, WJI National Executive Member Shiju Tharail, State President M. Santhosh Kumar, and General Secretary Ajaykumar Guruvayur expressed their strong protest against the incident. They emphasized that such acts of violence are a direct threat to the safety and security of journalists and undermine the fundamental principles of a free and fair press.
The WJI has urged law enforcement authorities to act decisively to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the protection of journalists in the state.
