Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India – In a powerful display of solidarity, workers and employees across India will observe a nationwide general strike on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, to protest the Central Government’s alleged anti-worker and anti-farmer policies. The 24-hour strike will commence at midnight on Tuesday, July 8, and conclude at midnight on Wednesday, July 9.
Elamaram Kareem, General Convener of the Joint Trade Union Forum, announced that all sections of workers and employees in Kerala will actively participate in the national strike. He urged the public to cooperate with the strike by keeping shops closed and avoiding unnecessary travel.
“We appeal to everyone to support the strike by closing their establishments and refraining from travel,” Kareem stated. He further clarified that essential services such as hospitals, ambulances, media organizations, and milk distribution have been exempted from the strike to minimize inconvenience to the public.
The strike has been jointly called by prominent central trade unions including CITU, AITUC, HMS, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, and UTUC, along with various federations of employees. In a significant show of support, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), front of farmer organizations, has also extended its backing to the nationwide protest.
The unions allege that the Central Government’s policies have adversely affected the rights and livelihoods of workers and farmers, leading to widespread discontent. This nationwide action aims to draw attention to these concerns and pressure the government to reconsider its approach. The specific demands of the striking unions and farmer organizations are expected to be elaborated upon as the strike approaches.
