Chennai, December 20
A proposal seeking the renaming of Chennai International Airport after 18th-century warrior queen Velu Nachiyar and Marina Beach after freedom fighters Maruthu Pandiyar brothers has been forwarded to district-level authorities for further examination.
The representation, submitted by Raghul Gandhi RGK, National Organizer and South Zone President of the Hindustan Janata Party, was initially acknowledged by the Prime Minister’s Office and subsequently forwarded to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Special Cell.
According to official communication, the Chief Minister’s Special Cell has accepted the petition and recommended that the matter be examined by the Chennai District Collector and the Chennai Corporation Commissioner for appropriate action.
The proposal cites the historical contributions of Velu Nachiyar, regarded as one of the earliest Indian queens to wage armed resistance against British colonial forces, and the Maruthu Pandiyar brothers, who led early uprisings against British rule in Tamil Nadu.
Officials said the proposal would be reviewed in accordance with existing administrative procedures. Any decision on renaming public infrastructure would involve multiple levels of scrutiny and require approval from the State government.
No timeline has been indicated for a final decision.
