Theni Jailbreak: 13 of 17 Undertrial Prisoners Recaptured; Drones and 300 Police Personnel Deployed in Forest Search

Dramatic escape from Thekkampatti Sub-Jail; nine prison staff suspended; search intensified for the remaining four prisoners

THENI: Police have recaptured 13 of the 17 undertrial prisoners who escaped from Thekkampatti Sub-Jail in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district after allegedly attacking prison guards. The prisoners reportedly staged an epileptic seizure inside their cell to mislead the staff before launching a coordinated assault and fleeing the prison.

Eight of the escapees were reportedly tracked down and apprehended in a forest area during a search operation involving drones and more than 300 police personnel. A search is continuing for the remaining four prisoners, with surveillance intensified along areas bordering Kerala.

Following the incident, a statewide alert was issued. Nine prison staff members, including three head constables, were suspended over alleged security lapses. Tamil Nadu Prisons Director General Sandeep Rai Rathore visited the scene to assess the situation and said the remaining four escapees would be arrested soon.

Faked Seizure, Attack on Warder and Dramatic Escape

The dramatic incident unfolded on Monday night at Thekkampatti Sub-Jail. According to preliminary reports, the prisoners allegedly pretended that one of their fellow inmates was suffering an epileptic seizure.

When a warder opened the cell to provide emergency assistance, the prisoners reportedly attacked him collectively.

The warder sustained a serious head injury. The prisoners allegedly pushed him aside and fled through the prison’s main entrance, escaping together in a coordinated move.

The escape of 17 undertrial prisoners at the same time triggered an immediate response from prison authorities and the police.

Investigators suspect that the escape was planned in advance. An inquiry is under way to determine how the prisoners managed to overpower the staff and leave the facility through the main gate.

Five Prisoners Apprehended in the Initial Hours

Police launched an extensive search across several locations soon after the escape. Five of the prisoners were reportedly apprehended during the initial phase of the operation.

Praveen was found hiding in bushes behind the prison, reportedly before he could move far from the premises.

Another escapee, Silambarasan, was arrested while walking along a road near Andipatti, approximately six kilometres from the jail.

Rajkumar and Raja Sikandar were apprehended on a rural road in Ukkaraipatti, around 10 kilometres from the prison.

Lingaprasad, a native of Alavanthan, was caught while attempting to board an autorickshaw in a town about six kilometres away. He was subsequently admitted to hospital due to health complications.

Eight Escapees Found in Forest Search Using Drones

The search operation was intensified after police received information suggesting that some of the escapees had entered a forest area near Theni town.

More than 300 police personnel were deployed, with drones assisting the search teams in scanning the forest terrain.

The operation reportedly led to the apprehension of eight prisoners who were hiding among rocky outcrops and dense bushes. With their capture, the total number of recaptured escapees rose to 13.

The use of drones helped the police coordinate the search and locate individuals concealed in difficult-to-access areas. Further searches are under way on roads and in border regions amid concerns that the remaining four prisoners may have moved towards neighbouring areas.

17 Special Teams Formed; Vigilance Increased Along Kerala Border

In response to the incident, police formed 17 special investigation and search teams to track down the escapees.

Checks have been intensified on major roads, vehicles, bus stations and other transport routes. Surveillance has also been expanded across several districts of Tamil Nadu.

Authorities have issued alerts in areas bordering Kerala, considering the possibility that the remaining four prisoners could attempt to cross the state border.

Police are expected to question the apprehended prisoners to gather information about the escape plan, the movements of the group and the possible hideouts of those still at large.

Nine Prison Staff Members Suspended Over Security Lapses

The suspension of nine prison personnel, including three head constables, follows concerns over serious security lapses at the facility.

Investigators are examining how the prisoners managed to attack the warder after requesting emergency medical assistance and subsequently escape through the main entrance.

The inquiry is expected to examine security arrangements, staff deployment, duty procedures and possible shortcomings in prison surveillance.

Further disciplinary action may follow depending on the findings of the investigation.

Incident Revives Memories of the 1995 Vellore Jailbreak

The Theni incident has drawn comparisons with one of Tamil Nadu’s most notable prison escapes — the 1995 jailbreak at Vellore Fort, when 43 LTTE prisoners reportedly escaped by digging a tunnel.

The method used in the latest incident was markedly different. Instead of constructing a tunnel or using an elaborate escape route, the prisoners allegedly attacked prison personnel and fled through the main gate.

The incident has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of security arrangements at correctional facilities and the procedures followed during emergencies.

‘Tamil Nadu Prison Break After Breaking Bad’: Political Row

The incident has also triggered a political war of words in Tamil Nadu.

Former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin reportedly made a sarcastic reference to the jailbreak, describing it as a “Tamil Nadu Prison Break after Breaking Bad,” drawing attention to concerns over the state’s security situation.

The escape of 17 undertrial prisoners in a single incident, followed by reports of some of them hiding in a forest, has put the prison department and the state administration under scrutiny.

Search Continues for the Remaining Four

Although 13 of the 17 escapees have been recaptured, the police operation remains under way to locate the remaining four prisoners.

Searches are continuing in forest areas and along state borders. Investigators are also examining how the prisoners managed to overpower prison personnel and escape through the main entrance.

The immediate priority for the police is to apprehend the remaining escapees. The findings of the investigation will also be crucial in identifying security failures and preventing similar incidents in the future.
