Veteran actor, screenwriter, and filmmaker Sreenivasan, one of Malayalam cinema’s most influential voices in satire and social commentary, passed away on Saturday, marking the end of a distinguished 48-year-long career in the film industry. He was 69.
Widely admired for his sharp wit, grounded performances, and socially conscious writing, Sreenivasan’s demise is being mourned as a major loss to Malayalam cinema and cultural discourse.
Death
Sreenivasan breathed his last at the Thrippunithura Taluk Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment. He had been battling prolonged health issues for several years, according to close associates and family sources.
Life and Career
Sreenivasan made his debut in cinema in 1976 with filmmaker P. A. Backer’s Manimuzhakkam. Over the decades, he went on to appear in more than 225 films, leaving an indelible mark as an actor, writer, and occasional director.
Renowned for blending humour with piercing social criticism, Sreenivasan reshaped Malayalam cinema’s narrative style through iconic screenplays such as Odaruthammava Aalariyam, Nadodikkattu, Sandesam, and Njan Prakashan. His characters often reflected the struggles, contradictions, and aspirations of the common man, making his work both entertaining and thought-provoking.
