Shrirampur, Maharashtra – January 1, 2026:
Aslam Shabbir Shaikh, also known as Bunty Jahagirdar (52/53), an accused in the 2012 Pune serial bomb blast case, was shot dead in broad daylight in Shrirampur town of Ahilyanagar district on Wednesday afternoon.
According to police, Jahagirdar was returning from a funeral at a local burial ground on his two-wheeler when two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle opened fire at him near Borawake College Road around 2 pm. He sustained multiple bullet injuries and collapsed at the spot.
He was first taken to the Sakhar Kamgar Hospital in Shrirampur, and later shifted to a private facility, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
Ahilyanagar Superintendent of Police Somnath Gharge confirmed the killing and said the motive behind the attack is still unclear. An FIR for murder has been registered at Shrirampur police station, and investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and other leads to trace the attackers.
Jahagirdar had been out on bail since 2023 in relation to the 2012 bombings on Jangli Maharaj Road (JM Road) in Pune, where multiple low-intensity explosions damaged several locations, leaving one person injured.
The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) had arrested him in January 2013 for his alleged role in the blasts. Police records also show that Jahagirdar faced several other criminal cases in Ahilyanagar district, including charges related to murder, bodily harm, extortion, and criminal intimidation.
Local authorities have formed multiple teams to probe the incident, and efforts are underway to determine whether the attack was motivated by personal enmity, ongoing criminal rivalries, or links to other cases.
