A major controversy has erupted in Telangana after an ancient temple, believed by locals and historians to be nearly 800 years old, was allegedly demolished shortly after being discovered during a forest-clearing operation.
The incident reportedly took place in a forested region undergoing land development and vegetation removal work. During excavation and tree-clearing activities, workers uncovered stone structures, carved pillars, and remnants of what appeared to be an old Hindu temple dating back to the Kakatiya period.
Videos and photographs circulating on social media showed partially exposed stone idols, traditional carvings, and broken temple architecture scattered across the site.
However, before a detailed archaeological inspection could be completed, heavy machinery allegedly demolished large portions of the structure, triggering outrage among local residents, heritage activists, and opposition political parties.
Locals Demand Investigation
Residents of nearby villages staged protests, accusing authorities of negligence and demanding immediate action against officials responsible for the demolition.
One protester told local media:
“This was part of our history and culture. Instead of protecting it, they destroyed it within hours.”
Another activist said:
“If this structure was truly from the Kakatiya era, it should have been preserved and examined by the Archaeological Survey of India.”
Heritage Activists Raise Concerns
Historians and conservation groups expressed concern that several undocumented historical structures in Telangana remain vulnerable during infrastructure and land-clearing projects.
Experts noted that the Kakatiya dynasty, which ruled large parts of present-day Telangana between the 12th and 14th centuries, was known for its distinctive temple architecture and stone craftsmanship.
A heritage conservation volunteer said:
“Many ancient temples in forest regions remain unprotected because they are undocumented. Once machinery moves in, irreversible damage happens within minutes.”
Political Reactions
Opposition leaders criticized the state government over the incident and demanded a judicial inquiry.
Some leaders alleged that authorities ignored early warnings from villagers after the structure was discovered.
Meanwhile, local officials reportedly stated that the exact historical significance of the structure had not yet been officially verified and promised an investigation into the demolition claims.
Demand for Archaeological Survey
Following the protests, citizens and heritage organizations called for:
- An immediate halt to all excavation and land-clearing work in the area
- A detailed archaeological survey of the site
- Protection for remaining structures and artifacts
- Criminal action if illegal demolition is confirmed
The incident has reignited debate over the preservation of historical and religious heritage sites during rapid urban and infrastructure expansion across Indian states.
