An FIR has been registered against former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) founder Mamata Banerjee over allegations that she made a speech capable of inciting communal tensions during an election campaign.
The case was filed at Netaji Nagar Police Station in Kolkata following a complaint submitted by a local resident. According to the complaint, Banerjee delivered an allegedly provocative speech during a protest held in Kolkata on the 3rd of this month. The complainant claims that her remarks could create religious divisions and disturb communal harmony.
The complaint specifically refers to statements allegedly made by Banerjee during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign. According to the complainant, she suggested that a particular community would face consequences if voting patterns changed. The complaint argues that such remarks could generate fear, uncertainty, and social tension among the people of the state.
This is not the first legal complaint against Banerjee in recent months. Last month, another FIR was reportedly registered following a complaint by a lawyer who alleged that some of her statements had hurt religious sentiments.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress is reportedly passing through one of the most challenging periods in its history after suffering defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections.
The electoral setback has triggered intense internal conflicts, power struggles, and criticism of Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. Reports suggest that a sizeable group of party MPs has openly challenged the leadership, exposing deep divisions within the party.
The internal dispute came into public view after a letter signed by nearly twenty MPs surfaced. The letter, reportedly submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, sought permission for the dissenting MPs to function as a separate bloc in Parliament.
Among the signatories were several prominent TMC leaders, including Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Satabdi Roy, June Malia, Sayani Ghosh, and former Indian cricketer-turned-politician Yusuf Pathan.
Reports also indicate that well-known figures such as Yusuf Pathan, actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha, and Sayani Ghosh are associated with the dissenting group.
The emergence of the letter is being viewed as a major setback for the TMC leadership because it publicly confirms the existence of a significant rebel faction within the party at a time when it is trying to recover from its electoral defeat.
