LOS ANGELES: Iran produced a spirited comeback performance to earn a valuable 2-2 draw against New Zealand in their opening Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, recovering from a deficit on two separate occasions to secure a crucial point.
New Zealand made a dream start when winger Elijah Just found the net in the seventh minute, finishing off a well-worked move to give the Oceania side an early advantage. Iran responded positively and restored parity in the 32nd minute through Ramin Rezaeian, who capitalized on sustained pressure to level the score before halftime.
The Kiwis regained control shortly after the break. Just struck again in the 54th minute, completing his brace and becoming the first New Zealand player to score twice in a World Cup match. His clinical finish restored New Zealand’s lead and appeared to put them on course for a memorable victory.
However, Iran once again demonstrated their resilience. Just ten minutes later, Mohammad Mohebi rose highest to head home the equalizer, bringing the score to 2-2 and setting up a tense finale.
Both sides pushed for a winning goal in the closing stages, but solid defensive displays and key saves from the goalkeepers ensured the points were shared.
The result leaves both teams with one point in Group G, which also features Belgium and Egypt. While New Zealand will take confidence from their attacking display, Iran’s ability to fight back twice under pressure could prove significant as the group stage progresses.
