Spain Edge Belgium 2-1 to Reach World Cup Semi-finals as Lamine Yamal Sets Historic Record

Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Belgium in a thrilling quarter-final clash.

Spain will now face France in the semi-finals, one step away from the final. Although 18-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal did not register a goal or an assist despite troubling the Belgian defence throughout the match, he left the field after setting a remarkable World Cup record.

Lamine Yamal Breaks World Cup Record

With his appearance against Belgium, Lamine Yamal became the player with the most FIFA World Cup appearances before turning 19. Aged 18 years and 363 days, the Spanish winger made his sixth World Cup appearance, surpassing all previous records for players under the age of 19.

Northern Ireland’s Norman Whiteside, who played five World Cup matches in 1982, is now second on the list. Brazilian legend Pelé (1958) and Spain midfielder Gavi (2022) each made four World Cup appearances before turning 19.

Ruiz Gives Spain the Lead

Spain dominated possession from the opening whistle and took the lead in the 30th minute through Fabián Ruiz. Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois initially saved the effort, but Ruiz reacted quickest to convert the rebound.

Belgium responded just before half-time. Kevin De Bruyne’s pass released Timothy Castagne, whose cross was met by Charles De Ketelaere with a powerful header to level the score at 1-1.

Courtois Injury Proves Costly as Merino Seals Victory

The second half produced dramatic moments, with Belgium suffering a major setback in the 71st minute when goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was forced off with a leg injury. Substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens replaced him but was unable to make the same impact.

With the match seemingly heading for extra time, Spain found the winner in the 88th minute. Pau Cubarsí’s long-range effort slipped through Lammens’ hands, allowing substitute Mikel Merino to react first and tap home the rebound, securing a deserved 2-1 victory for Spain.

Spain will now take on Kylian Mbappé’s France in a highly anticipated World Cup semi-final.
