Erling Haaland announced himself on the FIFA World Cup stage in spectacular fashion, scoring twice as Norway powered to a commanding 4-1 victory over Iraq in their Group I opener at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Making their first World Cup appearance since 1998, Norway delivered an impressive display, with Haaland leading the charge in his long-awaited tournament debut. The Manchester City striker wasted little time making an impact, netting two first-half goals to help his side secure all three points.
Norway took the lead in the 29th minute when Haaland converted a precise cross from David Moller Wolfe. Iraq responded positively and found an equalizer ten minutes later through captain Aymen Hussein, whose well-placed header briefly reignited hopes for the Asian side.
However, Norway regained control before halftime. A defensive mistake by Iraq allowed Haaland to intercept a weak back pass and calmly slot home his second goal of the evening, restoring Norway’s advantage and giving them a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
The Norwegians continued to dominate after halftime, creating several chances while limiting Iraq’s attacking opportunities. Their pressure paid off in the 76th minute when defender Leo Ostigard rose highest from a corner kick to head home Norway’s third goal.
Deep into stoppage time, Iraq’s misery was compounded when an unfortunate own goal involving Aymen Hussein sealed a comprehensive 4-1 victory for the Scandinavian side.
Speaking after the match, Haaland admitted he felt nervous before his World Cup debut but was delighted with the result.
“A World Cup debut is never easy. I was nervous, but starting the tournament with a 4-1 win gives us great confidence,” he said.
The victory marks a dream return to football’s biggest stage for Norway, who are appearing in the tournament for the first time in 28 years. It also strengthens their position in a highly competitive Group I, where France had earlier defeated Senegal 3-1.
Norway will next face Senegal in a crucial group-stage encounter, while Iraq must regroup quickly ahead of a difficult test against France.
