MEXICO CITY: Colombia launched their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K campaign in impressive fashion with a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan at the iconic Estadio Azteca on Wednesday, powered by a standout performance from Luis Diaz.
Playing in front of more than 80,000 spectators, Colombia controlled much of the contest and were rewarded five minutes before halftime when Daniel Munoz converted a precise pass from Diaz to give Los Cafeteros a deserved lead. Diaz had earlier rattled the woodwork as Colombia repeatedly threatened the Uzbek defense.
World Cup debutants Uzbekistan responded positively after the break and made history in the 60th minute when Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal, drawing his side level and briefly shifting momentum.
However, Colombia quickly restored their advantage. Just five minutes later, Diaz capped another influential display by finding the back of the net to make it 2-1, re-establishing his team’s control of the match.
Uzbekistan pushed forward in search of another equalizer, but Colombia’s defense held firm. Deep into stoppage time, Jaminton Campaz sealed the result with a third goal, putting the outcome beyond doubt and ensuring a comfortable victory for the South Americans.
Colombia finished with the better attacking statistics, registering 15 shots compared to Uzbekistan’s nine, underlining their dominance throughout much of the encounter.
After the match, Colombia head coach Nestor Lorenzo praised his side’s strong first-half display but acknowledged there was room for improvement following Uzbekistan’s equalizer. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan coach Fabio Cannavaro commended his players for their determination and competitive spirit despite the defeat.
The victory moves Colombia to the top of Group K after Portugal and DR Congo played out a draw in the group’s other fixture. Colombia will next face DR Congo as they look to strengthen their position and move closer to the knockout stage.
With Luis Diaz delivering on football’s biggest stage, Colombia have sent an early statement of intent and strengthened their credentials as one of the tournament’s teams to watch.
