OREM, Utah – A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, capping a major manhunt that has drawn national attention. Utah Governor Spencer Cox and other officials confirmed the arrest of Tyler Robinson, identifying him as the alleged shooter.
The arrest came after a family friend of Robinson’s contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, stating that Robinson had confessed to or implied his involvement in the shooting. The tip was reportedly prompted by the release of surveillance video and images by the FBI and law enforcement, which showed a suspect running across a roof and fleeing the scene.
According to Governor Cox, investigators had been able to track Robinson’s movements on the day of the shooting, including his arrival at Utah Valley University in a Dodge Challenger. His clothing matched the attire of the suspect seen in the surveillance footage. Law enforcement also received information from Robinson’s roommate, who shared messages from the group chat app Discord that linked Robinson to the crime, including discussions about retrieving and stashing a rifle.
President Donald Trump first announced the arrest during a television interview, stating that someone close to the suspect had turned him in. The arrest brings a sense of closure to a case that has sent shockwaves throughout the American political community.
Authorities believe that Robinson, who reportedly had become “more political” in recent years, acted alone in the “political assassination.” He has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice. The investigation is ongoing, and officials are working to gather all forensic evidence.
The FBI has offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of the person responsible, and it received thousands of tips that aided in the swift apprehension. The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the case and a step toward justice for Kirk’s family and supporters.
