New Delhi, November 10, 2025: A powerful car explosion near the Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening has killed at least nine people and left 20 others injured, according to official reports. The blast, which occurred at approximately 6:52 PM near Gate No. 1 of the busy metro station, sent shockwaves across the capital and prompted an immediate high alert in Delhi and neighboring states.
The Incident
The explosion took place in a Hyundai i20 vehicle that was reportedly moving slowly through traffic before it detonated near the Red Fort traffic signal, one of the most crowded zones in central Delhi. The blast caused a massive fire, engulfing multiple nearby vehicles — including three cars, two e-rickshaws, and an auto-rickshaw — and leaving the area strewn with debris.
Eyewitnesses described the explosion as “deafening and blinding”, with several recounting scenes of chaos and panic. One local shopkeeper said,
“The car suddenly burst into flames with a huge noise. Within seconds, everything around was burning — people were screaming and running for their lives.”
Casualties and Medical Response
Officials at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital confirmed that nine victims were declared dead upon arrival, while 20 others are receiving treatment for burns and blast-related injuries. Several remain in critical condition, and authorities have appealed for blood donations to aid the victims.
Investigation Underway
Following the explosion, Delhi Police, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the National Security Guard (NSG), and teams from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) swiftly cordoned off the site to begin a comprehensive investigation.
Initial findings indicate that the car was registered in Haryana. Investigators have traced the vehicle’s ownership history — from a former owner in Gurugram, to a buyer in Delhi’s Okhla area, and possibly to an individual from Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities are verifying whether the car carried any improvised explosive device (IED) or if the blast resulted from mechanical or chemical ignition.
Government Reaction
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were briefed on the situation shortly after the blast.
Home Minister Shah, who visited both the blast site and LNJP Hospital, stated:
“The government is exploring all possibilities. No angle will be ruled out — whether it’s terror-related or otherwise. Those responsible will face the strongest possible action.”
