Hindu Youth Dies After Mob Chase in Bangladesh, Triggers Outrage Over Vigilante Violence.

Another Hindu Youth Dies After Mob Chase in Bangladesh; Police Probe Underway, Yunus-Led Government Responds

Dhaka, Bangladesh:
In another tragic incident linked to mob violence in Bangladesh, a 25-year-old Hindu youth, Mithun Sarkar, lost his life after jumping into a canal while fleeing an angry crowd that accused him of theft. The incident took place in Mahadebpur area of Naogaon district, police confirmed on Tuesday.

Mithun Sarkar, a resident of Bhandarpur village, reportedly panicked after being chased by locals who suspected him of stealing. In an attempt to escape the mob, he jumped into a nearby canal and drowned. His body was later recovered by rescue teams.

Bangladesh Police Version

According to Bangladesh Police officials:

  • The victim was suspected of theft by local residents.
  • No formal theft complaint had been registered at the time of the chase.
  • While being pursued, Mithun Sarkar jumped into a canal and drowned.
  • The body was recovered and sent for post-mortem examination.

A senior police officer said,

“At present, the case has been registered as an unnatural death. We are verifying whether the theft allegation had any basis and identifying those involved in the chase.”

Police stated that CCTV footage, witness statements, and mobile videos, if available, are being examined as part of the investigation.

Response from the Yunus-Led Interim Government

The interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus expressed concern over the incident and reiterated its stance against mob justice.

A government spokesperson said:

“No citizen has the right to take the law into their own hands. The administration has instructed law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure accountability if negligence or unlawful actions are found.”

The government also emphasized that mob violence will not be tolerated, regardless of the identity of the victim or the accusation involved.

Public and Community Reaction

The death has triggered strong reactions from minority rights groups, civil society activists, and members of the Hindu community, who allege that Mithun Sarkar was targeted without proof.

Local residents and activists questioned:

  • Why no immediate police intervention occurred during the chase
  • Why theft allegations continue to escalate into deadly mob pursuits

Several social media users condemned the incident, calling it another example of the dangers of suspicion-driven vigilantism and warning that minorities often face disproportionate vulnerability in such situations.

A Pattern of Mob Violence

This incident adds to a growing list of deaths in Bangladesh linked to mob attacks and public chases over theft allegations, a trend that has alarmed human rights organizations. Experts note that fear, rumor, and instant judgment often replace due process, leading to fatal consequences.

Investigation Continues

Authorities have assured that legal action will be taken if evidence emerges that individuals incited violence or unlawfully chased the victim. The Yunus-led administration has reiterated its commitment to rule of law, minority safety, and prevention of mob justice.

As the investigation continues, the death of Mithun Sarkar has once again sparked a national conversation about public accountability, law enforcement response, and the urgent need to curb mob violence in Bangladesh.
