Rahul Gandhi Announces Five Major Welfare Promises for Kerala; ₹3000 Pension and Free Travel for Women.

Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi announced five major welfare guarantees for Kerala, promising that they will be implemented if the United democratic front (UDF) comes to power in the state. The announcement was made during a public meeting in Thiruvananthapuram as part of the opposition’s campaign ahead of the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections.

The proposed schemes focus on social welfare, women’s empowerment, healthcare, and support for small businesses.


Five Major Promises Announced

1. Welfare Pension to be Increased to ₹3000

Rahul Gandhi said that the social security pension will be raised to ₹3000 per month.
This scheme is expected to benefit:

  • Senior citizens
  • Widows
  • Persons with disabilities

The aim is to improve financial security for vulnerable sections of society.


2. Free Bus Travel for Women

Women will be allowed to travel free on buses operated by Kerala road transport corporation (KSRTC) if the UDF forms the government.

According to the announcement, the policy aims to:

  • Reduce travel expenses for working women and students
  • Encourage greater mobility and participation of women in education and employment.

3. Monthly Stipend for Female Students

The Congress leader also promised a monthly stipend of ₹1000 for female college students.

The objective is to:

  • Support higher education
  • Promote financial independence among young women.

4. Health Insurance up to ₹25 Lakh

A new healthcare program named after former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will provide health insurance coverage up to ₹25 lakh per family.

The proposed scheme aims to:

  • Reduce the financial burden of medical treatment
  • Improve access to quality healthcare.

5. Interest-Free Loans for Small Businesses

The UDF also promised interest-free loans up to ₹5 lakh for small entrepreneurs and startups.

This initiative aims to:

Rahul Gandhi also said that a separate ministry for senior citizens would be established to address the welfare needs of the elderly population.
