Sudan’s conflicts are not just political battles — they are deeply rooted in tribal identity, ethnicity, religion, land, and power struggles. Over the past two decades, the world has witnessed some of the most horrific mass killings and genocides in this region.
1. Major Tribal Groups
Sudan’s population broadly falls into two major social groups:
(A) Black African / non-Arab Tribes
- Fur
- Masalit
- Zaghawa
- Nuba
- Other riverine tribes
(B) Arab Tribes
- Rizeigat
- Baggara
- Janjaweed militias mainly originate from these groups
The first layer of conflict: The historic enmity between these two major ethnic-tribal groups.
2. Religion: Not the Main Factor
Interestingly, most Sudanese are Sunni Muslims. The current war is not a religious conflict.
However, the main tension lies in:
- Arab Muslims vs African Muslims
- Even though religion is the same, tribal and ethnic differences fuel the hatred.
3. Darfur (2003–2005): Janjaweed Genocide
In Darfur, the African tribes — especially Fur, Masalit, and Zaghawa — were targeted:
- Mass killings
- Villages burned to the ground
- Widespread sexual violence against women
- Families forced to flee
The Janjaweed militias (now RSF) and allied Arab forces saw non-Arab African Muslims as “enemies”.
The United Nations officially labeled this as “genocide.”
4. Current War (2023–2025): SAF vs RSF
RSF = Legacy of Janjaweed
Non-Arab African tribes remain heavily targeted.
RSF Allegations:
- El Fasher 2025 Massacre — 1,000–3,000 people killed
- Ethnic cleansing in Masalit areas
- Drone strike on children (Dec 2025: 33 children killed)
Most RSF fighters come from Arab tribes.
SAF (Sudanese Armed Forces)
They have conducted airstrikes in some areas as well, leading to civilian casualties.
5. How Ethnic Hatred Intensified
Reasons:
- Battle over farmland and resources
- Desertification and water scarcity
- “Arab vs African” identity reinforced by the Darfur war
- Political divisions and tribal allegiances (RSF vs SAF)
- Authoritarian rule (Bashir era) encouraged Arab militias
6. Current Genocide Allegations
Targeted Tribes:
Masalit, Fur, Zaghawa (non-Arab Muslim African tribes)
Perpetrators:
Arab-RSF militias (Janjaweed roots)
Reported atrocities:
- House-to-house killings based on ethnic identification
- Children shot
- Hospitals and schools hit by drone strikes
- Bodies buried or burned to hide evidence
- Entire villages destroyed
These acts are labeled “Genocide” and “Ethnic Cleansing” by the UN, ICC, and human rights organizations.
7. Not a Religious War — An Ethnic Struggle
Clear facts:
- Arab Muslims vs African Muslims
- One tribe trying to dominate another
- Political groups exploiting ethnic identity as a weapon
8. Future Threats
UN warnings:
- Kordofan, Darfur, and Blue Nile regions could face the largest ethnic purge in a century
- With limited food and medicine, ethnic cleansing + famine + displacement could lead to a massive humanitarian catastrophe
