DK Shivakumar Era Begins in Karnataka: Sworn In as Chief Minister; G. Parameshwara Named Deputy CM.

Bengaluru: Karnataka entered a new political chapter on Wednesday as senior Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar was sworn in as the state’s Chief Minister, succeeding Siddaramaiah. Veteran Dalit leader G. Parameshwara took oath as Deputy Chief Minister, marking a significant reshuffle in the Congress leadership structure in the southern state.

The swearing-in ceremony, attended by top Congress leaders, coalition partners, and thousands of party workers, signalled the formal transfer of power to one of the party’s most influential strategists and organisers.

From Crisis Manager to Chief Minister

Known within Congress circles as a master political negotiator and troubleshooter, D.K. Shivakumar’s elevation to the top post is being viewed as the culmination of a long political journey spanning more than three decades.

Shivakumar played a crucial role in safeguarding Congress legislators during multiple political crises and earned a reputation as one of the party’s most effective “crisis managers.” His organisational skills, fundraising abilities, and influence across Karnataka have made him one of the most powerful leaders in the state Congress unit.

With Siddaramaiah stepping aside, the party leadership ultimately entrusted Shivakumar with the responsibility of leading the government into the next phase.

G. Parameshwara Gets Key Role

Senior Congress leader G. Parameshwara, one of Karnataka’s most prominent Dalit faces, was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister.

Party leaders said the appointment reflects Congress’ effort to balance regional, caste, and organisational interests while ensuring representation for key social groups within the government.

Parameshwara has previously served as Karnataka Congress president and held several important ministerial portfolios.

One of India’s Wealthiest Political Leaders

D.K. Shivakumar is widely regarded as one of the wealthiest politicians in India. According to election affidavit disclosures, his declared assets exceed ₹1,413.78 crore, placing him among the richest chief ministers in the country.

His business interests, agricultural holdings, real estate investments, and family-owned enterprises have contributed significantly to his financial profile.

Political analysts note that Shivakumar’s vast resources, coupled with his organisational influence, have made him a central figure in Karnataka politics for years.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the celebratory atmosphere surrounding his elevation, Shivakumar faces several immediate challenges:

  • Delivering on Congress’ electoral promises.
  • Maintaining unity among competing factions within the party.
  • Accelerating infrastructure and investment projects.
  • Managing fiscal pressures while expanding welfare programmes.
  • Preparing the party for upcoming local body and parliamentary elections.

Observers say his success will depend on balancing governance priorities with the complex political dynamics that have long characterised Karnataka.

Congress Bets on Strong Leadership

Congress leaders described Shivakumar’s appointment as a strategic move aimed at consolidating the party’s position in Karnataka. The leadership believes his administrative experience, grassroots network, and ability to manage political crises make him well suited for the role.

As D.K. Shivakumar assumes office, attention will now turn to how his government performs and whether he can translate his political influence into effective governance for Karnataka’s nearly seven crore residents.
