BENGALURU: In a decisive move aimed at promoting local enterprise and sustainability, the Karnataka government has mandated the exclusive use of products from the state-owned Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) brand, Nandini, at all official government meetings and programmes. The directive was issued by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on October 28 and circulated to all departments through an official note.
Key Directives and Measures
- Exclusive Use of Nandini:
All government departments, including those within the Vidhana Soudha and the Secretariat, have been instructed to “mandatorily use Nandini products” — such as milk, curd, ghee, and other dairy derivatives — for refreshments and catering during government meetings, conferences, and public events. - Plastic Ban Reinforced:
In tandem with the sustainability initiative, the Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s ban on single-use plastic bottles, directing departments to provide eco-friendly alternatives for drinking water at all official functions. - Supporting Farmers and Local Industry:
CM Siddaramaiah stated that the policy serves a dual purpose — encouraging sustainable practices while ensuring consistent support for Karnataka’s dairy farmers. The KMF, which operates under a cooperative model with millions of dairy farmers as stakeholders, is India’s second-largest milk federation and a major contributor to the state’s rural economy.
Background and Broader Context
The government’s move comes months after a political and public debate surrounding the entry of external dairy brands into the Karnataka market. Concerns were raised by farmer organizations and opposition parties that national brands could undercut Nandini’s market share, potentially harming the livelihoods of local milk producers.
By mandating the use of Nandini in all official functions, the government aims to strengthen brand loyalty, local production, and economic self-reliance. Officials have noted that the decision also aligns with the state’s “Buy Local, Support Local” vision and the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative.
Environmental and Economic Implications
The twin directives — supporting Nandini and enforcing a plastic ban — reflect the Siddaramaiah government’s efforts to integrate environmental consciousness with local economic empowerment. Officials have confirmed that circulars reinforcing these orders will be issued to all district administrations, boards, and corporations.
