New Delhi, August 15, 2026: India marked its 80th Independence Day with a historic ceremony at the Red Fort in New Delhi, where the full rendition of the National Song, ‘Vande Mataram,’ was performed for the first time as part of the Independence Day ceremony. The event also featured an aerial flower shower by Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopters carrying the Tricolour and a ‘Vande Mataram’ flag.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurled the National Flag at the historic ramparts and delivered his 13th consecutive Independence Day address from the Red Fort. This year’s celebrations placed particular emphasis on ‘Yuva Shakti’ (youth power) and the goal of building a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) by 2047.
‘Vande Mataram’ echoes across the Red Fort
The ceremony marked a significant change in the traditional Independence Day programme. After the Tricolour was unfurled and the ceremonial 21-gun salute was conducted, the Army band played ‘Vande Mataram’, with those present joining in the National Song. It was followed by the National Anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’.
The rendition has added significance this year as India observes the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’. The song, written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, became one of the most powerful symbols of India’s freedom movement.
Helicopters shower flowers over Red Fort
The flag-hoisting ceremony was followed by a spectacular aerial display. Two Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopters showered flower petals over the Red Fort. One helicopter carried the National Flag, while the other carried a flag depicting ‘Vande Mataram’.
The aerial flower shower provided one of the most striking visual moments of the Independence Day celebrations in Delhi.
PM Modi: ‘Every heart is beating with the rhythm of Vande Mataram’
Addressing the nation, Prime Minister Modi invoked the patriotic spirit associated with ‘Vande Mataram’ and paid tribute to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices secured India’s independence.
“Every heart is beating with the rhythm of Vande Mataram,” Modi said, underlining the song’s enduring emotional and historical significance. He said the sacrifices of the freedom fighters should continue to inspire the country as India moves towards a developed nation.
Target: Viksit Bharat by 2047
A central theme of Modi’s Independence Day address was the ambition to make India a developed nation by 2047, when the country will mark 100 years of independence.
The Prime Minister placed young Indians at the centre of this transformation, stressing that India’s demographic strength, technological capabilities and entrepreneurial energy would be crucial to achieving the 2047 target.
Focus on self-reliance and critical technologies
Modi also stressed the importance of self-reliance, particularly in strategically important sectors. His address highlighted critical minerals, energy security and semiconductor technology as important areas for India’s future growth.
He outlined what he described as a ‘Sapta Dhara’ (Seven Streams) approach to development, linking economic growth with strategic capabilities and national self-reliance.
Youth power and artificial intelligence
The Prime Minister gave particular importance to India’s youth. The Independence Day programme itself was built around the theme of ‘Yuva Shakti — Viksit Bharat @2047’.
Technology and artificial intelligence also featured prominently in the government’s development agenda, with emphasis on preparing young Indians for the rapidly changing digital economy.
2,500 young participants form ‘Vande Mataram’
Another major attraction was the participation of around 2,500 NCC cadets and My Bharat volunteers from the Army, Navy and Air Force. They were positioned along Gyanpath opposite the Red Fort and formed the words ‘वंदे मातरम्’ as part of the ceremony.
At the conclusion of the Prime Minister’s address, the young participants were scheduled to sing ‘Vande Mataram’, followed by the National Anthem.
Around 5,000 special guests attend
Around 5,000 special guests from different walks of life were invited to witness the Independence Day ceremony at the Red Fort. The celebrations sought to showcase the contribution of young Indians and highlight the government’s vision for India’s development towards 2047.

This year’s Independence Day celebration brought together three powerful images: the Tricolour flying over the Red Fort, ‘Vande Mataram’ resonating through the historic venue, and IAF helicopters showering flowers from the sky.
