In a remarkable feat of engineering and logistics, Indian Railways unveiled ‘Super Vasuki’, the country’s longest and heaviest freight train, on August 15, 2022. This initiative was part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, marking the 75th anniversary of India’s independence.
Designed exclusively for coal transport, the Super Vasuki stretches an astounding 3.5 kilometers in length, making it not only the longest train in India but also one of the longest freight trains in the world.
Unprecedented Scale and Capacity
The train consists of 295 wagons, powered by six locomotives placed strategically throughout its formation. It has the capacity to carry nearly 27,000 tonnes of coal in a single journey — equivalent to five regular freight trains combined.
The successful trial run was conducted by the South East Central Railway (SECR) zone, from Korba (a major coal loading point in Chhattisgarh) to Rajnandgaon, showcasing the Indian Railways’ growing prowess in heavy-haul freight operations.
