In a moment of pride for the Indian education sector, several Indian universities have secured prominent positions in the QS World University Rankings 2025, marking a significant leap in global academic recognition.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has emerged as the top-ranked Indian institution globally, securing a place in the top 150 for the first time, with an impressive ranking of 118. This marks a notable jump from last year’s position of 149. The university was lauded for its academic reputation, employer perception, and research impact.

Following closely, IIT Delhi ranked 150, and IISc Bengaluru stood at 160, earning high praise particularly for its citation per faculty – a key indicator of research excellence. IISc remains the highest globally ranked Indian institution in terms of research influence.

Other Indian institutions making it to the top 500 include:

IIT Madras – Rank 227

IIT Kanpur – Rank 263

Delhi University (DU) – Rank 407

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) – Rank 478

This year’s QS rankings evaluated over 5,000 institutions worldwide, considering parameters such as academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, employer reputation, international faculty and student ratio, and citations per faculty.

According to Ben Sowter, QS Senior Vice President, “India’s consistent rise in global rankings reflects both policy efforts and institutional initiatives toward research quality, internationalization, and innovation.”

The Union Ministry of Education welcomed the rankings, stating, “These achievements underscore India’s growing global academic presence and the effectiveness of the National Education Policy (NEP) in enhancing institutional performance.”

With ongoing efforts in global collaboration, curriculum reform, and infrastructure enhancement, Indian universities are expected to continue climbing in upcoming editions of global rankings.
